Why does this change in my code from a compile error to a run-time exception?
I was asked a question on how to solve this equation:
4x^2 + 3x - 1 = 0
The answer I came up with is
double factor1 = (double) Math.Pow(x, 2);
double factor2 = (double) Math.Pow(x, 1);
double factor3 = (double) Math.Pow(-1, 1);
double combinedFactor = factor1 * factor2 * factor3;
if (combinedFactor == 0.0)
{
int n = 1;
}
When I first wrote the code, I got the error "System.Double' does not contain a definition for 'Pow' and no extension method 'Pow' accepting a first argument of type 'System.Double' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)"
Then I added the following using statement
using System.Linq;
The error then went away, but now the code doesn't run! It doesn't even get to the first if statement. I tried removing the last if statement, but the compiler still refuses to compile it.
