Spleen tyrosine kinase (SYK) plays a role in inflammatory responses by mediating macrophage functions. In this study, we examined the effect of SYK on the development of experimental colitis. Colitis was induced by trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS) in mice. Clinical signs were evaluated and histological changes of the colon were analyzed. Cytokine production and expression of adhesion molecules were analyzed in vitro. TNBS treatment induced colonic ulceration and inflammatory cell infiltration, and the ulcer area was significantly attenuated in mice given the SYK inhibitor BAY61-3606.
